a little austen

last night was a great back to book nook night!  friends, food, and books in one night-the best!  over the summer it was decided that we would pick a book by jane austen and share when we regrouped.  a couple of us started with persuasion and ended up reading sense and sensibility.  which by the way is a lovely read.  persuasion is not.  and emma was read.  and pride and prejudice was also read.  it was interesting to compare movies to books and books to books.  
some of favorite quotes and thoughts of the night:  in sense and sensibility it is understood why marianne does not initially take to colonel brandon.  he is old. er.  the book makes a bigger deal of the ousted dashwood girls and mom.  it is a very promenent part of the beginning.  willoughby really is not a good person.  elinor says of that "you made your own choice.  no one forced you."  i like that.  also, where it all started "  the old gentleman dies:  his will was read; and , like almost every other will, gave as much disappointment as pleasure."  this is certainly true for the dashwood ladies.  i also like that there is a growth in character.  i think that growth in character is seen throughout the austen books.  in emma, by the end she is a changed person.  from spoiled to aware.  things i didn't know because i haven't read the book-she was not an only child, her father loved porridge, she marries mr. knightly sooner rather than the very end.  it intrigues me when there are differences from book to movie and what they choose to leave out and put in.  what becomes important.  then i have that idea in my head.  good.  but different.  unless you watch the harry potter movies and that is a whole different posting rant.    pride and prejudice is another epic and well known story that stands the test of time.  it is so perfectly perfect.  we have read that one before in our nook so i don't need to add too much more, but in case you forgot- elizabeth is the best heroine to a book and  i love her strength and composure.  
so to cap it off, it was a fun night to gather again.  i love jane austen and when you get a chance-i highly recommend skimming through and giving her books a chance.  until we meet again, happy reading.
